Dysfunctional for Capital
Current Debates on »Surplus Populations« in the Global Economy

The »surplus populations« of the Global South are once again becoming the focus of debates on capitalist theory. This is because the majority of the world’s working population still has to make its living largely outside of the capitalist mode of production in the narrow sense. In this article I argue, with reference to recent publications in the field of critical development theory, that the »surplus populations« must rather be understood as dysfunctional or at least afunctional for capital. Their survival has therefore primarily become a political question rather than a question of economic functionality.
