Abstract

Economists have repeatedly addressed the prosperity promise of war economies, the supposed economic benefits of war and post-war years that not only reduce unemployment but also lead to an increase in aggregate demand or destroy the surplus capacities that would lead to crises. In view of the catastrophes and destructions that the Second World War alone has brought about, these considerations seem unacceptable. A look at the history of political economy shows, however, that this has not stopped theorists from thinking about the connection between war economy and economic growth. This article presents central contributions to political economy that address the phenomenon affirmatively or critically.
