The »opening of the East« has led to a restructuring of the regional system in East-Central Europe. West European corporations spread out their locations of production activity over the extended European economic space. The formation of »branch plant economies« is not the only development path to be expected for the regions of East-Central Europe - the differentiation of westem corporation's investment strategies and the regions' different capacities for transformation are leading to a significant variation ofregional development paths.
