Abstract

Within the last decades, many protected areas have become armed fortresses of conservation. This is the result of new tendencies, like more professional poachers or the privatisation of national parks, and old legacies, as many of these parks were funded in colonial times. The article explores the militarisation of conservation in the Congo-Basin. It shows that the German government is heavily involved in the militarisation of conservation which has dramatic consequences for the local population.
