Taking himself as an example the author describes the working life of a teacher (at a West-German Gymnasium) in some detail. He tries to put his own experiences into a larger context by reflecting on the functions of school in society and on current educational politics. The author comes to the conclusion that not only the learning conditions of pupils but also the working conditions of teachers are in need of improvement, and he shows how these two aspects are interrelated.
