A radical industrial transformation is required to mitigate climate change: in the course of decarbonisation, production processes are to be powered by electricity from renewable energy sources and hydrogen instead of fossil fuels in the future. Controversial carbon capture and storage technologies also play an important role in the climate neutrality scenarios. Industrial production is therefore facing profound upheavals that will have an impact on employment relationships as well as international competition in the industrial sector, state industrial policy and North-South relations. The articles in PROKLA 216 also discuss the role played by fossil-fuelled forces of inertia on the one hand and trade unions and social movements on the other in the ‘green’ industrial transformation and the contradictions and conflicts that arise in the process.
