Vol. 52 No. 208 (2022): State Capitalism

Cover PROKLA 208: StaatsKapitalismus

The term »state capitalism« has experienced a renaissance since the outbreak of the global financial and economic crisis in 2007. Current transformations in the global economy, such as the rise of China, but also an apparently more prominent role of the state in economic policies of the centres, raise the questions: How is statehood changing in globalised capitalism and is there a »new« state capitalism? Is it even possible to speak of a »return of the state« in the centres under the catchword of state capitalism, for example in terms of state interventions in the Corona crisis, green transformation strategies or the rise in importance of state-organised forms of enterprise outside China as well? PROKLA examines the topicality of the talk of state capitalism and analyses how the relationship between state and capital, the role of statehood in the organisation of the economic can be understood beyond a state-market dichotomy. How did the relationship between statehood and capital change historically in the centres? How does the role of the state in the organisation of the economy differ between economies described as state capitalist and those described as market liberal?
