While the arrivial of the Euro is one of the most eminent events in Western Europe's post-war history, most social science theories take a rather narrow view on technical procedures of introducing a common currency. The literature on 'optimum currency areas', functionalist integration theories and the concept of central bank autonomy hardly takes into account the institutional arrangements necessary to cope with the political and social tensions that will arise from the new monetary regime of the supranational European Central Bank.
