Abstract

The great financial crisis of 2008 has led to the collapse of several European banks, damped economic growth in the European Union and stressed public finances due to banking rescue packages. Is the financial system in Europe more resilient today than ten years before or can we expect desastrous financial crisis again? Empirical data shows that the stability of the European banking sector improved somewhat, but several systemic and structural problems remain: The too-big-to-fail issue is still not resolved and the probability that public funds will be used for failing banks again is still high. In addition, banking activities shifted to the less regulated shadow banking market. Underlying structural weaknesses of the European economy will put a drag on the stability of balance sheets of European financial institutions.
