Abstract

The paper analyses spatial hierarchies and geopolitical conflict dynamics in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of the world systems approach. Data sets show that the model of core, semi-periphery and periphery is reproduced in vaccine distribution and production. The asymmetric distribution of resources to combat the COVID-19 crisis constitutes hierarchically structured vaccine worlds that spur geopolitical conflicts over vaccine production and distribution, with American, European and Chinese companies competing for influence and markets.
