Nuclear Arsenals of Destruction and Attempts at Arms Control Since the 1970s

The Cold War was the period of the arms race between the USA and the USSR. Nevertheless, agreements on arms control were also concluded from 1972 onward, and they became groundbreaking for the following decades. After 1990, expenditures on nuclear and conventional armaments were significantly reduced. At the turn of the millennium, a new global wave of rearmament took hold. Fifty years after the first major arms control agreements, such agreements are now widely considered as »dead«. How did the dynamics of rearmament come about, as well as the attempts to contain it? It seems relevant to examine not only the evolution of military strategy, but also the economic background. Are arms control obsolete today?
