Abstract

Electric vehicles – an ecological modernization of mobilization? Changing from vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel to vehicles powered by electricity from batteries does not solve the problems caused by car traffic. Pollution will not be reduced essentially by installing a traffic system based on electric cars. Instead, in combination with different rebound-effects the negative consequences of e-mobility prevail. The expected greater demand for scarce raw materials like lithium and cobalt will lead to a remarkable increase of social and ecological burdens in the mining countries. Up to now, there are no strategies which could countervail these negative effects.
