Tue collapse of Eastem European socialism has blocked the view as regards deficiencies in the West's system. Even the political Left is seen to have swerved to conservative positions in a rash manner. But it is precisely the Left that is expected to come up with new programmes for radically restructuring industrial societies' socio-ecological make-up; programmes which go beyond Marxist approaches which have tuined out to be inadequate.
