This essay critizes enthusiastic conceptions of globalization which suppose an extensive weakening of nation states. On the one hand, the previous autonomy of nation states is overestimated, and on the other hand, the different processes summarized by the term globalization need a more differentiated approach. This not only shows that these processes are to some extent structured by nation states but also that they contain some tendencies which strengthen nation states, as well as some tendencies weakening them.
