Abstract

This article argues that the relatively successful incorporation of Southem Europe into the European heartland of transnational production and finance occurred under fundamentally different circumstances than the present political and economic transformations in Central Europe. Different elite structures, a different impact of foreign capital on domestic structures and the neo-liberal underpinnings of the present EU enlargement strategy all point at the peripheralisation of the new capitalist democracies in Central Europe.
