When Justice Becomes Unattainable
Legal Battles in Tenancy Law, a Shortage of Legal Representation and the Resurgence of Social Inequality

This article examines legal struggles in tenancy law in the context of increasingly unequal housing markets and growing housing insecurity. Drawing on ethnographic research on eviction proceedings, it argues that crucial conflicts are often decided before reaching the courtroom, particularly through unequal access to legal representation. Combining insights from legal mobilization studies and legal geography, the article conceptualizes access to justice as a resource structured by class and space. The case of tenancy law reveals how social inequalities undermine the promise of legal equality and shape the capacity to mobilize rights.
