Work, Technology, Reflexive Emancipation
On the Democratic Negotiation of Collective Ties

In this article we explore the emancipatory potential of technologically optimized
work in times of economic and ecological crises. Work and technology are
understood as ambivalent forces that enable emancipation while also reproducing
domination. Based on a literature-driven analysis, the article reconstructs two arenas
of emancipation: emancipation from work through automation and emancipation
in work through democratic technology design. Given the limits of both approaches,
it argues for a third arena, which hints to a reflexive approach of emancipation: the
democratization of work as a collective negotiation of shared dependencies.
